Jimmy Carlen graduated from Georgia Tech in 1955 with a degree in Industrial Management. While at Tech he lettered for three years in football. He served in the Air Force for three years and then joined the Tech football coaching staff as assistant freshman coach. He became an assistant varsity coach working with the defense in 1962, assistant varsity coach in charge of defense in 1964. Carlen left Georgia Tech in 1966 to become head football coach at the University of West Virginia. He was the fifth defensive coach at Tech to step up to the position of head coach at another school.
