Title

Georgia Tech Class of 1917

Description

Members of the graduating class of 1917 are posed on the steps of the Administration Building. In the front row, in civilian clothes and wearing a straw boater hat, is President Kenneth G. Matheson. To his left, in Army uniform and holding a swagger stick, is General Leonard Wood. No others are identified. General Wood had been a member of the Tech football team that first played (and beat) the University of Georgia in 1893. He was then stationed at Ft. McPherson and had learned to play football when previously stationed in San Francisco. He enrolled at Tech as a member of the sub apprentice class, taking a course in woodworking, and coached and played for Tech. See GP141 and GP436 for related information.
