Georgia Tech Football Team of 1938
This photo shows the complete 1938 football team and three of its coaches. Team members are wearing dark jerseys and football pants. They are posed in three rows. The setting is outdoors, with the brick wall of Tech's Rose Bowl Field in the background. The team compiled a mediocre 3-4-3 record. The coaches all became legends at Georgia Tech. In the top row, left end is head coach William A. "Bill" Alexander, C.E. '12; 7th from the left is line coach Mercer McCall "Mack" Tharpe, Com '26. At the far right of the top row is Robert Lee "Bobby" Dodd, backfield coach at the time of the photo. Alexander and Dodd had long, successful careers as head coaches at Tech. Mack Tharpe was killed in World War II. Identification of individuals in this photo is available in GP273A which is a photograph published on page 25 of the home game football programs.
